Hoopoes are colorful birds found across Africa, Asia, and Europe, easily recognized by their distinctive crown of feathers. The set includes three living species and one extinct species. Historically, hoopoes held cultural significance in Ancient Egypt, where they appeared in tomb and temple artwork. They were also used symbolically in the Old Kingdom to represent an heir and successor. Over time, their meaning varied across cultures—considered sacred in some, symbolic in others—and they were eventually recognized as the national bird of Israel in 2008.
Scimitarbills, also known as woodhoopoes, form a distinct group found in Sub-Saharan Africa. They are notable for their metallic plumage, often displaying blue, green, or purple tones, and lack the crest seen in hoopoes. Their sexes appear similar in most species, and their curved bills—typically red or black—are a defining feature that gives them their name.
This set includes all hoopoe and scimitarbill species represented worldwide.
